Did you know that there are over 10,000 varieties of wine grapes in the world? The vast majority of commercial wine production is limited to only 19 of them, which are known as the “noble grapes”. Of the remaining 9,980, only about 1,350 are grown in large enough quantities to be commercially viable. This quarter’s collection is dedicated to these lesser-known varieties.
The stewards of these rare grapes are, in many cases, growing them to preserve local tradition and biodiversity, much like the farmers who grow and sell heirloom varieties of vegetables at your local farmer’s market. You can’t argue that the complex flavor of an heirloom tomato is inferior to that of a standard tomato – it simply isn’t true. They’re just different. The same goes for these grapes. Their names are hard to pronounce and you maybe have never heard of them, but they are certain to delight you with exciting new flavors and textures.
